Grandpa Man
By Bahati Osayimwese
Grandpa - man
Was the tallest man in the world, ya'll.
I looked up and all I could see
Was this great big man smiling down at me.
He rocked me up and down upon his knee.
Grandpa - man.
Grandpa - man
Was a Buffalo Soldier, ya'll.
Joined the Army's 10th Cavalry,
Wounded by bamboo in the Phillipines,
While dealing with the enemy.
Grandpa - man.
Grandpa - man
Tall, black and handsome as could be, ya'll,
Went down into Mexico,
Chasing the 'Villa' named Pancho.
Served some time in World War One.
How many times did he raise his gun?
Grandpa - man.
Grandpa - man
Got medals and some honors, ya'll.
In Third Ward he made a family.
Served as a hospital orderly
Honorably discharged from the military.
He was happy as he could be
With wife, children, grandchildren, &
greatgrandchildren like me.
Grandpa - man.
Grandpa - man
His hands really came in handy, ya'll.
He taught me how to walk
And how not to fall.
Explained how to run
And not just crawl.
Grandpa - man.
Grandpa - man
That he was a great boxer is true, ya'll.
Promoted War Bonds during World War Two.
Saved neighbor's kids as a fire grew.
Worked Ellington Field as a janitor
And baked apple pies til age "94".
Grandpa - man.
Grandpa - man
In '71 he went back home, ya'll.
But, I'm sure he enjoyed Midnight Mass
And the good times at St Nicholas.
Before that I'm sure he loved the flock
That worshipped over at Antioch.
Grandpa - man.
Grandpa - man
If I get Heaven here's what I wanna do
Take a solid gold Bible decorated with diamond jewels
And a picture of us two for
Grandpa - man.
Yea, that's what I'd like to do
Just as sure as the blue sky is blue.
Yea, I liked to see you,
Grandpa. man.
Yea, I'd like to see
Grandpa. man.
Yea, that's who I'd like to see
Because he means so much to me
About who I am and how I came to be.
Grandpa - man.
I hope that you can understand
The way I feel and how I love the man.
I would not exist today without
Grandpa. man.
I would not know who I am without
Grandpa. man.
I would not stand six feet tall without
Grandpa. man.
Shaping me and holding me and talking thru me
Grandpa - man.
I dedicate this poem to
Grandpa. man! |
